Red Dot in Brands & Communication Design
Marketsquare just won the world’s most prestigious design award, Red Dot, for its store design for the Greenlandic grocery store chain Pilersuisoq. The award was given in the Brands & Communication Design category in a competition with almost 7,000 submissions from 50 countries.
Marketsquare was given the task of rebranding the design of Pilersuisoq’s stores to give them a clearer identity. The agency developed an insight-based solution that reflected the Greenlandic people and culture, as well as the large differences between urban areas and rural settlements. Using local portraits and symbols in each shop provides a unique local experience, helping to create a greater sense of national pride.
Pleased with the results
“We approached the task with the deepest respect for Greenlandic identity and culture, which has a special significance for Greenlanders. For this reason the design was largely created focusing on what was important to the chain’s customers and not the other way around.”
Pilersuisoq and KNI’s head office in Greenland were incredibly pleased with the results. Anders Stenbakken, Head of Marketing at KNI is proud of the award: “We can relish the fact that the judges gave our new design an award. We were up against some of the very best designs worldwide. Bringing home an award to Greenland wasn’t too shabby either. The award also demonstrates what a strong and close collaboration between the client and agency can lead to. Throughout our years of collaboration Marketsquare has acquired in-depth insight into our brand, values and the Greenlandic culture. They successfully manage to translate this into meaningful communication.”

“We are of course amazingly proud to win the worlds’ biggest brand and design award. Our work reflects KNI’s passion about the Pilersuisoq brand, so the award is chiefly the result of a partnership based on immense trust and mutual understanding. This is exactly what is crucial to arriving at the best, most uncompromising solution, which is what is required to win the world’s biggest award in branding and design.”
